Many voices teach us, inspire us, and shine a light on a path we might consider as we make our way. I have added some quotes that are meaningful to me, but of course, the list is never ending. These “other lights” join with so many more that illuminate our world. If you see a voice that speaks to you, stop, write it down, ponder its message to you on this day. Trust the invitation and listen. Let us add our own light to theirs and dispel the darkness of fear. Let us claim the legacy of Love and live in the Light!
“Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light.”
-- Helen Keller
“I believe that we have no real access to who we really are except in God. Only when we rest in God can we find the safety, the spaciousness, and the scary freedom to be who we are, all that we are, more than we are, and less than we are.” -- attributed to Carl Jung
“God speaks to every person before making them. Then silently walks with them out of the darkness. These words, heard before anyone comes into being, are:
Follow your senses.
Go to the limits of your longing.
Behind everything shall rise a flame so that its shadow is great enough to hide me. Let everything happen to you, beauty and terror.
Just keep moving. No emotion should be too far fetched.
Do not separate from me.
Nearby is the land they call life.
You will know it be its sincerity.
Give me your hand.”
-- Rainer Maria Rilke
“Prayer is sitting in the silence until it silences us, choosing gratitude until we are grateful, praising God until we ourselves are a constant act of praise.”
-- Richard Rohr
“We have one solid comfort amidst this little tripping about: our hearts can always be in the same place, centered in God, for whom alone we go forward or stay back.”
-- Catherine McAuley
“Whatever you are seeking, is seeking you.”
“We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.”
-- Anais Nin
“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”
-- Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
“The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond. “
“You cannot understand how hard it is for one to be practical
who hopes for tenderness behind every face…
Others can be impersonal, but not one who believes
that he (she) is on an eminently personal adventure.
Others can be sensible, but not one who knows in his (her) heart
how few things really matter….
Others can be sober and restrained,
but not one who is mad with the loveliness of life,
and almost blind with its beauty.”
-- Myles Connolly
“Humility is stillness in the presence of my beauty and belovedness. So is standing in this truth of my being that flows from God’s love.”
-- John M Staudenmaier, SJ
“My God, I am yours for time and eternity.
Yes, I am your forever.
It is you who must teach me to trust in your providence, loving God.
You are a God of love and tenderness.
I put my faith in you
and ask that you grant me acceptance of your will, loving God.
Take from my heart all painful anxiety.
Let nothing sadden me but sin.
And then let my delight be hoping to see your face, God my all.”
-- suscipe of Catherine McAuley
